There is a particular kind of looking that Islamic geometric ornament demands and rewards: not the quick scan of a picture that resolves into a single readable image, but a slow, expanding attention that keeps finding new structure the longer it stays. This plate, lithographed by F. Durin and published by Firmin Didot Frères, Fils et Cie in Paris, is one of the most visually arresting specimens of that tradition ever committed to print. Part of the same great nineteenth-century encyclopaedia of world ornament that produced the Medieval and Moorish interior plates, it presents a full-page composition of Arabian decorative motifs drawn from manuscript illumination, tilework, metalwork, and architectural surface decoration, arranged not as a catalogue but as a single unified field of pattern that operates as a work of art in its own right.

The composition is anchored by a large central medallion, a shamsa or sun disc of the kind found at the opening pages of Quran manuscripts from Cairo, Baghdad, and Shiraz. It is a polylobed shape, its edges scalloped in the typical Islamic fashion, and within it layer upon layer of geometric and foliate pattern unfolds in deep cobalt blue, gold, teal, red, and black, the colours of the finest medieval Islamic bookbinding and tilework. Surrounding this central piece, a field of warm terracotta carries a repeating pattern of scrolling vine in red and gold, from which a constellation of circular medallions branch outward, each one a self-contained ornamental world rendered in deep blue with gold and white line work. A calligraphic roundel in the lower right contains Arabic script in gold on blue, almost certainly a devotional phrase or a royal epithet of the kind found on Mamluk metalwork and Timurid manuscript borders.

Durin's lithographic skill in rendering this plate is extraordinary. The deep cobalt blue of the medallion grounds, the warm sandy terracotta of the field, the crisp gold line work, and the small accents of red, white, and teal are all held in precise chromatic balance, the whole image glowing with the warmth of a manuscript page seen by candlelight. The two smaller rectangular panels at the foot of the plate show detail specimens of geometric star-pattern tilework, providing a change of scale and visual rhythm that makes the eye move freely across the entire composition.

Reproduced as a museum-grade archival fine art print on heavyweight cotton-rag paper, every layer of colour and every line of the intricate geometry is rendered with complete fidelity to the original. Hang it in a living room, dining room, or hallway where its jewel-like depth and visual complexity can fill the space with warmth. Frame it in aged brass or deep cobalt blue and let one of the most beautiful ornamental traditions in human history come home.
