White Cockatoo

There is a stillness to this bird that borders on the ceremonial. Tall, pale, and completely composed, the sulphur-crested cockatoo at the centre of this 1924 woodcut by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita occupies its dark rectangle with the quiet authority of something that has always been exactly where it is and intends to remain there.

The composition is deceptively simple. A tall, narrow white rectangle is set within a broader dark grey ground, framed by a thin white ruled border. A horizontal line of fine teeth or fringe marks divides the rectangle roughly at its midpoint, the perch on which the cockatoo sits, though the bird's body crosses this line so naturally that the division barely registers until you look for it. The cockatoo itself is rendered almost entirely in white, its form built from the negative space of the dark background rather than from positive marks on a light ground. This reversal of the usual relationship between figure and ground is one of de Mesquita's most characteristic techniques, and it gives the bird a luminous, almost glowing quality against the surrounding darkness.

The detailing is where the real craft reveals itself. The head and upper breast are covered in dense radiating lines that fan outward from the eye in every direction, describing the layered feathers of the face and crest with extraordinary economy and precision. The crest itself rises as a single bold swept form from the crown, clean and sculptural. The lower body and long tail feathers, by contrast, are rendered with the lightest possible touch, just a few curved lines indicating the layering of the primary feathers, leaving large areas of pure white that give the bird its sense of weight and volume without a single superfluous mark.

The eye sits at the exact centre of the radiating feather lines, small and dark, with a single curved line beneath it that reads as both anatomical detail and a suggestion of expression. It is the kind of mark that takes years to learn to make with that much confidence.
