Thistle and Sparrows

There is a generosity to this image that you feel immediately. A great thistle plant rises through the full height of the composition, its spined leaves and tightly budded flower heads rendered in pale sage and cream against a ground of warm burnished gold, and perched in its upper branches, one on each side, two small sparrows face each other with an air of perfect domestic contentment. It is a design of extraordinary richness and complete visual warmth.

Anton Seder was one of the leading decorative designers of the late 19th century, an Austrian artist whose 1886 publication Die Pflanze in Kunst und Gewerbe, meaning "The Plant in Art and Industry," became one of the most influential pattern design sourcebooks of the Art Nouveau period. Its chromolithograph plates, produced in Vienna with exceptional technical skill, presented botanical subjects as fully resolved decorative compositions ready for application to wallpapers, textiles, metalwork, and architectural ornament. Plate 27, this thistle design, is among the most spectacular in the entire volume.

The composition is built on strict bilateral symmetry around a central stem, the thistle's leaves and scrolling acanthus forms fanning outward in perfectly mirrored pairs from root to crown. The upper portion is dominated by the large central thistle head with its characteristic spined involucre, flanked by two smaller buds at the upper corners. The lower half opens into an elaborate baroque-influenced scroll of acanthus leaves that fills the gold ground completely. The two sparrows, rendered with enough detail to be genuinely convincing as birds rather than decorative ciphers, are the element that transforms the design from pattern into image.

The three-colour palette of warm amber gold, pale sage green, and cool cream is one of the most beautiful colour combinations in the entire Huecraft collection, simultaneously rich and restrained, historical and entirely liveable.
