The Sun

Most artists paint the sun as light falling on things. Edvard Munch painted the sun as a force, a presence, something that does not merely illuminate but overwhelms, radiates, and insists on being felt.

The Sun (1910–12) is one of the most extraordinary works of Munch's career, and one of the most purely exhilarating paintings of the early 20th century. A great blazing orb sits at the horizon line, dead centre in the composition, its single dark pupil staring outward like a cosmic eye that has always been watching. From it, thick rays of white, yellow, pink, green, teal, and blue explode outward in every direction, rendered in broad, vigorous strokes that fill the upper two-thirds of the canvas with almost unbearable energy. The warm amber ground beneath the rays gives the whole upper field a golden intensity, as if the canvas itself is on fire from behind. Below the horizon, a landscape of deep blue, purple, green, and red spreads outward in waves, cut through with diagonal red lines that carry the same raw, uncontained energy as the rays above. The whole composition radiates from that single central point with the certainty of something cosmological.

It is worth remembering that this is the same Munch who painted The Scream, and yet these two works could hardly feel more different in spirit. Where The Scream turns the sky into anxiety, The Sun turns it into joy. Both are painted with the same visceral intensity, the same refusal to represent the world at a safe emotional distance, but here that intensity is in service of something expansive and affirmative. This is what the world looks like when you are not afraid of it. The eye at the centre of the sun does not menace. It simply sees, calmly and completely, and sends its light in every direction without reservation.
