There are paintings that hang on a wall, and then there are paintings that breathe. Odilon Redon's The Spiritual Passing (circa 1899) belongs firmly to the second kind. Created at the height of his mature Symbolist period, this pastel work captures the final moments of the Buddha's passing, not as grief, but as a quiet return to the universe. A golden-robed figure rests low against the earth, surrendered and still, while above him the deep cobalt sky erupts in scattered bursts of white light.

Redon painted this during a deeply personal chapter of his life. Having spent his early career working in blacks and charcoals in a style he called his noirs, he turned to colour in the 1890s with extraordinary force. The blues he reached for were not decorative. They were spiritual. He described colour as the language the soul speaks when words are not enough, and in this work, that belief is fully alive.

The composition is masterfully weighted. A towering tree anchors the right edge, its bark warm and rust-toned, grounding the scene in the earthly world even as the sky above dissolves into something far less defined. Small blue wildflowers scatter across the lower ground, thin flame-red brushstrokes dart across the mid-sky like embers or departing spirits, and the foliage at the canopy glows yellow-green, almost electric, as if nature itself is quietly responding to the moment.

Redon drew on Buddhist philosophy with genuine reverence, deeply interested in Eastern thought and the idea that consciousness extends beyond the body. This painting sits at that exact intersection, part meditation, part elegy, entirely transportive. What makes it so enduring is its refusal to be dramatic. There is no wailing, no crowd, just a figure, a tree, a sky full of light, and the feeling that something immense has just happened very quietly.
