De Mesquita was one of the most distinctive printmakers working in early 20th-century Amsterdam. A beloved teacher at the Amsterdam School of Arts and Crafts, he counted M.C. Escher among his most famous students, and his influence on the graphic arts tradition of the Netherlands was profound. His work blended European Art Nouveau sensibility with a deeply personal visual language, full of rhythm, tension, and intricate linework that rewards a slow, close look. Tragically, de Mesquita and most of his family were murdered by the Nazis in 1944, making every surviving work of his a deeply significant piece of cultural and human history.

This particular print is a masterclass in contrast and composition. A spent bird-of-paradise flower rises dramatically against a luminous full moon, its jagged, sword-like petals still carrying the suggestion of wild energy even in their fading. Below, a woman rests in quiet profile, her wide-brimmed hat patterned with a hypnotic series of scalloped arcs and oval dots, her flowing hair rendered in undulating lines that echo the organic rhythms of the natural world above her. The two figures, botanical and human, exist in a shared stillness. Neither dominates. Together they form a meditation on beauty, impermanence, and the quiet poetry found in endings.

The woodcut technique itself adds another layer of meaning here. Every white line was carved by hand into the block, every shadow earned through physical labour and intention. The result is a texture that feels alive, like something pressed from the earth rather than printed on a page. The deep blacks absorb the light around them while the fine white lines seem almost luminous, creating a visual depth that makes this piece feel three-dimensional on the wall.

Reproduced as a Huecraft archival fine art print, this image is rendered with gallery-grade precision on premium heavyweight paper using fade-resistant inks, so every carved line and tonal nuance is preserved exactly as de Mesquita intended. It is the kind of print that grows with you, revealing new details each time you pass it.

Hang it in a study lined with books and warm lamplight, in a moody dining room with dark walls and natural timber, or as a centrepiece in a living room that values art with genuine depth and story. It pairs beautifully with botanical specimens, antique frames, and interiors that lean into the richness of black, ivory, and forest green.
