Tall Tale

Few birds have captured the human imagination quite like the bird of paradise, and few artists have captured the bird of paradise quite like Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita did in this 1914 woodcut. Tall, narrow, and almost entirely black, it is a composition of extraordinary elegance and graphic confidence that stops you completely.

The bird sits on a horizontal branch at the upper centre of the composition, its compact dark body rendered in fine radiating lines that suggest the texture of dense plumage. A bold white face, circular eye, and curved bill give it an almost heraldic quality. Below the branch, two extraordinary plume trains cascade downward in twin curtains of dense herringbone-patterned feathers, each one trailing to a fine point that nearly reaches the base of the frame. The effect is somewhere between a crown jewel and a waterfall.

The near-total black ground presses close around the bird, making the fine white carved lines of the plumes seem to glow from within. The monogram and date 1914 in the lower left are characteristic de Mesquita touches, precise and quietly proud.
