Stillness Beside the Shrine captures a moment of profound quiet within the sacred rhythm of South Indian temple life. Painted in 1907 by Polish artist Jan Ciągliński during his travels through India, this intimate oil sketch turns away from spectacle to focus on what unfolds between rituals.
Seen from behind, a temple elephant stands calmly beside a weathered stone shrine. Its broad form fills the foreground, rendered in earthy browns and softened contours, while the carved pagoda-like structure rises gently beyond.
