Steps into the Sanctum captures a fleeting, intimate moment within the rhythm of temple life. Created in 1931 by Dutch artist Marius Bauer, this soft pastel study shows two men ascending a flight of stone steps, their forms loosely sketched in washes of yellow, grey, and indigo. There is no spectacle, no procession, only movement guided by habit and belief.

The composition is deliberately open and unfinished. Bauer’s light, searching strokes allow the air itself to remain visible, as though the scene is still forming. Sunlight spills gently across worn stone, dissolving edges and softening detail. The figures are anonymous, everyman silhouettes, reminding us that in Tamil culture, sanctity is not reserved for ceremony but lived through daily passage.
