There is a particular kind of visual pleasure that comes from a composition that gives you three things to look at simultaneously, each one complete in itself, and yet the three together form something richer than any one of them alone. This 1897 chromolithograph by Maurice Pillard Verneuil is exactly that kind of image, a triptych of decorative ideas presented on a single sheet with the confidence and fluency of someone who understood pattern, object, and colour as a unified language.

This is two wallpaper or textile designs flanking a study of an actual silver object, and the combination is one of the most inventive compositions in Verneuil's published output. The left panel is a warm crimson wallpaper pattern densely populated with life. Delicate hazel branches spread across the ground, their leaves rendered in dusty pink and sage, and among them small orange birds dart and perch while a dark bird, almost black, watches from the lower left with the stillness of something that has no need to move. It is a pattern full of quiet observation and organic rhythm. The right panel shifts the mood slightly. Against the same deep crimson ground, bold magnolia tulip forms in orange and dusky pink rise on pale stems, and two large dark crows anchor the composition with their silhouetted weight. Where the left panel feels busy and inhabited, this one feels more architectural, its forms larger and more graphic, the crows giving it a note of drama and slightly gothic edge.

Between these two textile studies, presented as though resting against them, is a silver goblet of extraordinary craftsmanship. Its broad circular mirror-disc base is ringed with a frieze of naturalistically modelled animals in low relief, horses, birds, deer, and other creatures moving through a continuous procession around its circumference. The handle above rises into a figural group of a goat beside a grapevine beneath a capital of grape clusters and foliage. The rendering of the silver in grey tones, its reflective surface catching the crimson of the hangings around it, is handled with a photographic precision that creates a striking contrast with the flat graphic quality of the patterns on either side. That contrast, between the three-dimensional object and its two-dimensional context, is entirely deliberate and enormously effective.

Reproduced as a Huecraft archival fine art print on premium heavyweight paper with fade-resistant inks, every layer of this richly complex composition, from the finest bird in the left panel to the most delicate animal relief on the goblet, is preserved with gallery-grade fidelity.

Hang it in a dining room where its subject matter, a beautiful silver object surrounded by the decorative richness of fine textiles, feels entirely at home. In a living room it works as a bold, horizontal centrepiece that anchors a wall with both colour and intellectual content. In a bar or entertaining space the deep crimson palette and the presence of the silver goblet create an atmosphere of warmth and considered pleasure. It suits interiors that love colour, pattern, and the decorative traditions of France at its most inventive and most alive.
