Pavão Ironwork

This 1897 chromolithograph by Maurice Pillard Verneuil presents three distinct decorative studies on a single sheet, each one a masterclass in a different craft tradition, and together they form one of the most refined and quietly spectacular plates in his entire published output. 

The upper panel dominates the composition and demands the eye immediately. A wrought iron fanlight gate spreads across the full width of the sheet in a semicircular form, its entire surface filled with an interlocking network of scrolls, curves, and botanical terminals radiating outward from a central peacock. The bird stands at the base of the composition with its tail fully spread, each feather becoming one of the curving iron bars that fan upward and outward to the edges of the gate. The rendering captures the weight and texture of actual forged metal with extraordinary precision, every joint, rivet, and twisted bar rendered in fine grey-green line.

Below, two contrasting studies occupy the lower half. On the left, a damask linen pattern presents cicadas and gooseberry branches as white-on-white relief, the motifs barely distinguishable from the ground, their presence felt as texture rather than colour. On the right, a lace border shows dragonflies moving through a field of dandelion heads rendered in the intricate bobbin-lace vocabulary of interlocking loops, knots, and radiating wheel forms. It is breathtakingly detailed and entirely convincing as a reproduction of actual lace.

The monochrome palette of soft sage grey throughout gives the whole sheet a unified, almost architectural quality, like a page from a master craftsman's portfolio rather than a decorative print. That restraint is deliberate and it is exactly what makes the piece so sophisticated and so easy to live with.
