In the early nineteenth century, Napoleon's Egyptian campaigns had set all of Europe dreaming of the Nile. Scholars, artists, and antiquarians rushed to document a civilisation that felt impossibly ancient and startlingly vivid at the same time. Léon-Jean-Joseph Dubois was among that generation of French draughtsmen who turned those findings into images of lasting beauty, producing this striking plate between 1823 and 1825 as part of a major scholarly publication on Egyptian antiquity.
The figure depicted is Bouto, known to the ancient Egyptians as Wadjet, one of the oldest and most powerful deities in the Egyptian pantheon. She stands upright on a plinth of lapis blue and gold, her green skin marking her as a figure of regeneration and the living world. In each hand she grips a crocodile, held firmly at the jaw, symbols of primal Nile force tamed and brought into divine order. Above her head rises the red Deshret crown of Lower Egypt, curled at the tip with a blue spiral, and around her neck a broad usekh collar gleams in bands of gold, red, and blue.
Bouto was the patron goddess of Lower Egypt and the protector of the pharaoh from birth, her name translating as "she of the papyrus thicket." She was associated with the cobra, the Nile delta, and the fierce maternal protection of royal children, often depicted nursing the infant Horus in the marshes while he was hidden from Seth. The crocodiles she holds here speak to her dominion over the dangerous, fertile waters of the delta, the same waters that made Egypt's civilisation possible.
Dubois rendered this image with the flat precision characteristic of the best Egyptological illustration of the period: clean outlines, pure unmodulated colour, and a compositional clarity that mirrors the original temple and papyrus sources it was drawn from. The hieroglyphic cartouche in the upper right corner identifies the deity and adds an authentic scholarly authority to the image. A thin red baseline anchors the composition with the quiet formality of a temple wall register.
Reproduced as a museum-grade archival fine art print on heavyweight cotton-rag paper, every line and colour field is preserved with exacting fidelity. Hang it in a study, library, or hallway where its calm authority and extraordinary graphic beauty can be properly appreciated. Frame it simply in black or dark navy to honour the ivory ground and let the red, gold, and blue sing against it.
