There are patterns that feel quiet and patterns that feel electric. This one is unmistakably the latter. Created in 1907 by the German designer I. Graf as a cover design for a notebook or booklet, Heftumschlag mit Flachenmuster, meaning "exercise book cover with surface pattern," this double-panel design is one of the most visually arresting pieces of Jugendstil decorative work you are likely to encounter. Deep, rich, and endlessly repeating, it has the quality of a night sky organised into something almost architectural.

The design is presented here as two side-by-side panels, each exploring the same underlying structure but with a different colourway that reveals just how much a palette shift can change the emotional register of a single motif. The structure itself is a grid of sinuous, interlocking vertical columns built from repeating teardrop or flame shapes, each one framed by two wavy parallel lines that create a continuous chain of elongated oval cells running from top to bottom. Inside each cell sits a small pointed motif, like a tiny fleur-de-lis or arrow tip, filling the space with a sense of contained energy.

In the left panel, both the column lines and the interior motifs are rendered in a vivid cobalt blue against a near-black ground. The effect is bold and saturated, the blue burning with an almost phosphorescent intensity against the darkness around it. The right panel introduces a third colour, a warm gold-beige, which appears in alternating columns of interior motifs alongside the blue. This small change transforms the mood entirely. The gold brings warmth and a slight shimmer to the composition, suggesting candlelight or metalwork, and the interplay between cool blue and warm gold against the black ground creates a visual vibration that makes the right panel feel almost three-dimensional. Together the two panels form a complete design statement, a demonstration of how a single well-constructed motif can carry multiple moods depending on how it is coloured. That kind of thinking is at the heart of great pattern design, and it is why this piece, created as a functional cover for a humble notebook over a century ago, still feels so sophisticated and so current.
