Midday Casual

There is a particular kind of contentment that belongs entirely to the person absorbed in a good book, unaware of being watched, unreachable by the ordinary world. Maurice Prendergast caught it perfectly, and dressed it in the most glorious colours he could find.

Midday Casual  (1895–97) is a watercolour of quiet, unhurried joy. A woman sits at a table, her face almost entirely hidden beneath an extravagant dark navy hat trimmed with yellow and crowned with a cascade of dark curls, a net veil falling softly over her features. She holds a crimson parasol in one hand and a small nosegay of red roses in the other, while an open book lies before her, apparently paused. Her cream-white dress is rendered in loose, confident strokes, full and unhurried, the clothing of someone who has nowhere else to be. To her right, a cobalt blue vase holds a generous burst of deep red blooms, and behind her a dappled green background pulses with light, enclosed by a fine dark border that gives the whole scene the feel of a very elegant postcard from another century.

Prendergast made this work during a formative period in his career, freshly returned from Paris where he had absorbed the lessons of the Post-Impressionists with real enthusiasm. He was particularly drawn to artists like Vuillard and Bonnard, who understood that a painting could be emotionally true and visually delightful at the same time. This watercolour sits squarely in that tradition. It is not trying to say anything heavy. It is trying to show you something lovely, and it does so with complete confidence.

The hat is extraordinary, a real piece of late Victorian millinery excess, dark and sculptural against the soft cream of the dress. The parasol is a deep theatrical crimson. The flowers are lush and almost aggressively red. And yet the woman herself is simply reading, her face half-hidden, her identity secondary to the mood she inhabits. Prendergast painted people enjoying being alive, and it shows in every loose, joyful brushstroke.
