Light in the Alhambra

Of all the interiors that nineteenth-century Europe became obsessed with documenting, none fired the imagination more completely than the rooms of the Alhambra. The Nasrid palace complex in Granada had been largely unknown to the wider European world until the late eighteenth century, and once travellers, architects, and artists began gaining access to its halls, what they found was almost incomprehensible in its beauty: entire rooms where every surface, from floor to ceiling, was covered in geometric tilework, carved stucco arabesques, and calligraphic bands, all of it interlocking with a mathematical precision that felt more like music than masonry. This chromolithograph, lithographed by Erandin and printed by Firmin Didot et Cie in Paris, is one of the finest visual records of that world ever committed to the printed page.

The Moorish or Mauresque style, as the French termed it, was the culmination of eight centuries of Islamic architectural culture in the Iberian peninsula, drawing on Persian, Arab, Berber, and local Andalusian sources into a visual language of overwhelming sophistication. The interlace geometry of the tile panels, the muqarnas honeycomb vaulting, and the calligraphic friezes were not decoration in the European sense, ornament added to a structure that existed independently of it. They were the structure's meaning, a built argument about the infinite nature of the divine expressed through pattern that never repeats and never ends.

Erandin's lithographic skill is fully tested here and fully met. The layered chromolithography captures the depth and warmth of the original surfaces with remarkable accuracy: the way the gold-red stucco glows against the green tile dado, the cooler blue-grey tones of the geometric panel on the right arch, and the pale Andalusian sky visible through the open archway.
