Few artists understood the decorative potential of the natural world quite like Maurice Pillard Verneuil, and this 1897 chromolithograph from his celebrated publication series is one of the most joyful and richly layered examples of that understanding. It is a plate that gives you almost everything at once, a tall ceramic vase, an ornate bronze planter inset with an enamel panel, a lavish botanical wallpaper, and a gilded frieze of garden snails, and somehow it holds together with the effortless coherence of a room that has been considered down to its last detail. It is, in other words, a study of two specific decorative objects presented against a third, a boldly patterned wallpaper that ties the composition together and gives both objects a context in which to shine.

The jardiniere at the centre is the showpiece. Its bronze frame, raised and modelled, curves at the corners into shell and foliate forms that give it a sculptural presence. Within the frame, an enamel cloisonne panel depicts a kingfisher in full flight, its wings spread wide in pale blue and white, diving toward a rippling blue water surface where two golden fish leap and turn. Reed grasses in warm bronze-green rise behind the bird, and the stylised wave pattern of the water below creates a rhythmic horizontal movement that balances the vertical drama of the bird's descent. It is a scene of complete natural energy, translated into the flat, jewel-bright language of cloisonne enamel with extraordinary skill.

Behind the objects, the wallpaper fills the entire background in a pattern of dark green acanthus scrolls against a sage ground, punctuated at regular intervals by large circular clusters of small yellow flowers. It is a pattern of considerable richness and depth, and yet it recedes perfectly behind the objects in the foreground, doing its job of providing context without competing for attention. And at the very base of the composition, a terracotta-red frieze carries a repeating border of golden garden snails, their shells rendered in warm amber spirals, their bodies extended in a slow, golden procession across the lower edge. It is one of Verneuil's most characteristic moves, elevating the humble and overlooked into something genuinely beautiful and giving the composition an unexpected note of wit and warmth.

Reproduced as a Huecraft archival fine art print on premium heavyweight paper with fade-resistant inks, every layer of colour and every fine detail from the enamel panel to the snail frieze is preserved with complete gallery-grade fidelity.

Hang it horizontally in a dining room where its warmth, colour, and subject matter feel entirely at home. In a living room it anchors a wall with the kind of decorative confidence and historical depth that takes years to curate in any other way. In a bar or entertaining space the teal, gold, and green palette creates an atmosphere of pleasure and abundance that suits a room built for good evenings. It pairs beautifully with dark timber, aged brass, botanical prints, and any interior that embraces the full decorative ambition of Art Nouveau at its most alive.
