Created in 1920 by French decorative artist Claudius Denis, this chromolithograph plate from his publication Etudes et Idees de Decoration is one of the most breathtaking examples of Art Nouveau botanical ornament you are likely to find. The composition is structured as a tall vertical panel, mirrored along its central axis with the precision of a butterfly's wings. At the very top, a single pale green flower bud hangs suspended, flanked by two large golden wing-like leaves that curve outward and upward with theatrical confidence. Scrolling acanthus forms in warm amber and gold frame the upper arch, their surfaces detailed with teal green accents that keep the warmth from becoming overwhelming. The side columns are dense with overlapping botanical forms, golden ginkgo-like leaves layered over deep violet and plum shadows, creating a sense of lush, almost jungle-like abundance that frames the quieter central panel.

Against a wash of the softest blush pink, ghostly iris and columbine forms are rendered in pale mint green, lilac, and ice blue, their outlines barely darker than the ground they sit on. They seem to float, or perhaps to grow upward from some luminous underground source, becoming gradually more substantial and colourful as they reach the bottom of the panel, where two full iris blooms open in rich lavender and violet, their falls tipped with teal and their throats touched with burgundy and gold. The transition from pale and ethereal at the top to full and saturated at the bottom is handled with extraordinary skill and gives the composition a sense of movement and growth that feels genuinely alive.
