There is a particular kind of beauty in a design that was never meant to be seen as art. This watercolour study by Gust van de Wall Perné, created somewhere between 1887 and 1911, is a working design for a decorative mirror intended to hang above a fireplace mantel. The handwritten annotations in the upper right corner, noting dimensions and placement, are still visible. And yet, presented on its own terms, it is one of the most quietly lovely things you will encounter in the Dutch Arts and Crafts tradition.

The design Perné conceived here is both restrained and richly considered. The frame is rendered in a deep forest green, broad and architectural in its proportions, with gently curved shoulders at the top that give it a quiet, almost ecclesiastical dignity. At the crown, a small central motif shows a stylised bird, a stork or heron, rendered in pale cream against the dark green ground, flanked by two small dots on either side. It is modest in scale but precise in execution, the kind of detail that rewards a close look. Running down each upper corner of the frame, a single peacock feather is drawn in fine cream lines, its eye at the top and its shaft trailing downward with elegant restraint. At the base corners, small crescent cutouts lighten the weight of the frame and add a decorative note that feels genuinely inventive.

The mirror glass itself is suggested by a wash of soft watercolour, pale blue and sage green pooling gently at the centre and edges, luminous and slightly atmospheric. It does not pretend to be a finished rendering. It is a sketch of an idea, and the looseness of the painted glass only makes the precision of the frame around it more striking by contrast.

Reproduced as a Huecraft archival fine art print on premium heavyweight paper with fade-resistant inks, every brushstroke and pencil annotation is preserved exactly as Perné left it.

Hang it in a hallway where its subject matter, a mirror, creates a gentle visual play with its surroundings. It brings a sophisticated, story-rich note to a living room gallery wall, and in a bedroom it carries just the right combination of elegance and calm. It suits interiors drawn to the Arts and Crafts tradition, deep greens, natural materials, and spaces that appreciate objects with genuine history behind them.
