Illuminated Initials

Before the printed word became ordinary, every letter was a considered act. The dominant centre is given over to the large crimson initials: a towering A and B in the upper section, each letter set against a densely scrolled red-on-red ground where acanthus leaves, flowers, and vine tendrils fill every negative space; then an ornate T at mid-page, its crossbar and stem interlocked with the same restless foliate energy; and below it a broad L-shaped border fragment showing the corner detail of an illuminated page, the kind of frame that would have enclosed a full-page miniature in a Book of Hours or a royal charter. These red pieces are the showpieces, bold and unapologetic, built on the visual logic of Italian Renaissance woodcut and manuscript illumination.

The tradition documented here runs from the Carolingian manuscripts of the ninth century through the Lombardic letters of the Gothic period and into the humanist scripts of the Italian Renaissance, when scholars and printers in Florence, Venice, and Rome began systematically recovering and reimagining the letterforms of classical antiquity. The result was the alphabet as we still largely use it today, and the ornamental initial as one of the most refined and pleasurable objects in the entire history of visual culture. These letters were drawn by people who understood that a single character, given enough care, could be as complex and as satisfying as a painting.
