Golden Medallions

Rich, layered, and completely absorbing, this Meiji-era sheet of Gikakushi, Japanese leather paper, is one of the most visually complex pieces in the Huecraft collection. Created between 1873 and 1880, it presents three circular medallions, each containing a miniature landscape scene, set against an all-over ground of dense gold-on-dark fret pattern that covers every millimetre of the surface with obsessive, hypnotic detail.

Gikakushi, meaning "imitation leather paper," is a Japanese decorative paper tradition with roots in the Edo period. The ground pattern is a continuous grid of small square spiral forms, the classic Chinese and Japanese key fret motif known as sayagata or thunderscroll, rendered in warm gold against a deep olive-brown that shifts between green and black depending on the light. The density and consistency of this ground across the entire sheet is a remarkable feat of craft patience. Against it, three large circular frames, each slightly different in size and positioned in a loose diagonal from upper left to lower right, contain detailed landscape scenes rendered in the same two-tone gold and dark palette. Each scene shows figures in a mountainous setting, tiny human presences dwarfed by dramatic cloud formations, rocky outcrops, and architectural elements that suggest temples or pavilions. The scenes read like compressed episodes from a longer narrative, quiet and self-contained.

Small rectangular cartouches with vertical striped details appear beside each medallion, likely representing decorative title panels or seals, adding a further layer of visual incident to an already extraordinarily rich surface.
