Golden Drop

There are images that appear simple and reveal themselves slowly. This 1910 plate by Danish designer Chr. J. Cato is one of them. A single teardrop form, large and centred, rendered in warm khaki-gold on an aged cream ground with a terracotta border. Cato's choice of the teardrop as his subject for this plate suggests he understood the form in exactly those terms: a shape so fundamental that it barely needs presenting, yet one that, given the right scale, placement, and ground, becomes something genuinely arresting. The teardrop encompasses the circle, the oval, and the pointed arch in a single continuous edge, a form found across cultures from Islamic architecture to Japanese family crests to the tear ducts of every living face.

The form itself is rendered as a flat silhouette in a warm, slightly muted gold-brown, its colour close to raw umber or dried clay, with the subtle tonal variation of a hand-applied paint surface visible across its face. A faint mark near the centre of the form suggests a crease or slight paint lift in the original, a human trace that the archival reproduction preserves faithfully. The aged cream ground has developed the warm, speckled patina of genuine old paper, and the terracotta-orange border that frames the composition matches the companion Three Leaf plate in the same series.

The numeral 14 in the upper right corner and the publisher's imprint at the lower edge, Nybohn and Frederiksen, Copenhagen, ground the image in its time and origin without diminishing its timelessness.
