Of all the images Gustav Klimt ever painted, few carry the combination of beauty and unsettling power that Hygieia possesses in such concentrated form. This figure, the goddess of health and cleanliness from Greek mythology, appears as a detail from Klimt's controversial 1900 ceiling painting Medicine, one of three Faculty Paintings commissioned for the University of Vienna that caused a public scandal for their unconventional, dreamlike treatment of their subjects. Hygieia stands frontally, her gaze downward and inward, holding the serpent of Asclepius in one raised hand and a golden bowl in the other, her body entirely encased in a garment of vertical crimson and gold stripes studded with circular gold medallions and diamond-shaped ornaments that cascade from shoulder to floor with the hypnotic rhythm of a Byzantine mosaic translated into oil paint. Her crown, a dense jewelled confection of gold rings, blue-green enamel, and black elements, sits above a face of cool, composed authority that gives nothing away.

The surface richness of this painting is quintessentially Klimt, anticipating the full gold-leaf exuberance of his Golden Phase works like The Kiss while still operating within a painterly rather than a purely decorative register. The vertical striped garment, alternating deep crimson and pale gold, creates a visual rhythm that is both decorative and deeply satisfying, while the large circular gold forms scattered across its surface add a slower, heavier beat that anchors the composition. The grey-silver background, loosely painted and atmospheric, provides the cool tonal counterpoint that makes the warm reds and golds burn all the more intensely.

This Huecraft archival fine art print is produced on museum-grade stock with premium pigment inks that capture the full chromatic intensity and decorative richness of Klimt's original painting. The deep crimson and warm gold of the garment, the cool grey of the background, the jewelled crown, the pale gold of the serpent, and the fine detail of the circular and diamond ornaments are all reproduced with the colour fidelity and archival permanence this masterwork of Art Nouveau painting deserves.

On your walls, Hygieia brings an immediate and lasting sense of beauty, power, and decorative authority. The deep crimson, warm gold, and cool grey palette is both striking and surprisingly versatile, working beautifully in contemporary, classical, maximalist, and gallery-style interiors. It is a natural and outstanding choice for a living room feature wall, a bedroom, a home library, or any space where you want a single work that combines the full force of Klimt's artistic genius with the enduring presence of a goddess who has never gone out of style.
