Centaurs

Some myths never die. They just wait for the right artist to find them again.

Centaurs(circa 1910) is one of Odilon Redon's most atmospheric forays into classical mythology, painted during the final and perhaps most freely expressive chapter of his long career. The canvas is dense and alive, two centaur figures moving through a landscape that feels less like a place and more like a feeling. One rears upward, head tilted back, a crown of pink blossoms sitting incongruously, tenderly, atop a powerful and ancient form. He had spent decades working in the dark, producing his hauntingly strange noirs, before colour claimed him completely. By 1910, his palette had become something extraordinary, rich, layered, and lit from within, and in Centaures that mature palette does the emotional heavy lifting beautifully.

What makes this painting genuinely surprising is the pink floral crown. In the midst of this raw, turbulent, painterly world, that small detail of delicacy reframes everything.
