This plate comes from the same celebrated Firmin Didot series as its companion piece on the European medieval hall, but it takes us somewhere altogether different in time and spirit. Where that image showed the warm, domestic bustle of a Gothic great hall in northern Europe, this one reconstructs an interior from the earlier, more ceremonial world of the Byzantine Middle Ages, somewhere in the overlap between late Roman grandeur and early Christian devotion. Lithographed by Durin and printed in Paris by Firmin Didot et Cie, it is one of the finest evocations of Byzantine domestic and ecclesiastical interiors ever produced for a general readership, labelled in French, English, and German for the widest possible European audience.

The room is extraordinary. The back wall is dominated by a great painted apse, its half-dome arch framed in concentric bands of vine scroll and interlace ornament in deep red, green, and gold, and within it a golden mosaic scene of Christ enthroned in majesty, flanked by attendant figures in the rigid, frontal posture of Byzantine iconography. Flanking the apse on both sides, a continuous frieze of saints and courtly figures runs along the upper register of the wall, painted on a warm gold ground with the flat, hieratic formality of a manuscript illumination scaled up to room size. The ceiling above is coffered and painted in green, red, and gold, each panel filled with foliage ornament, the whole surface a controlled riot of colour and pattern.

The lower half of the room is quieter and more domestic. Four women occupy the space in a scene of intimate daily life: one stands near the left colonnade carrying a small casket, another enters through a doorway at the centre bearing folded cloth, and to the right a seated woman in a blue dress tends to a reclining figure on an ornate Byzantine bed hung with red and teal curtains. A tall candelabrum stands between them, its iron branches holding oil lamps, and on the terracotta brick floor two small decorative tiles catch the light at the centre foreground. The contrast between the sacred grandeur of the upper walls and the quiet human activity below is precisely the point: in the Byzantine world, the sacred and the everyday shared the same room.

Reproduced as a museum-grade archival fine art print on heavyweight cotton-rag paper, the chromolithographic depth of the original, its layered golds, warm terracottas, and jewel-bright greens and blues, is preserved with complete fidelity. Hang it alongside its companion medieval interior print as a diptych, or let it stand alone in a library, study, or hallway. Frame it in aged gold or deep walnut and give your walls a room within a room, one that has been waiting a thousand years to be looked at again.
