There is something about this paper that feels less like a designed object and more like a force of nature caught mid-motion. Swirling, curling, folding back on itself in great warm loops of terracotta and teal, Otto Eckmann's marbled paper from the 1890s has the energy of weather, of water, of something that was never entirely under anyone's control and is all the more beautiful for it.

This marbled paper, created somewhere between 1894 and 1902 and bearing a pencilled attribution at the top of the sheet, represents a different and more intimate side of Eckmann's practice. Marbling is by its nature a collaborative process between the maker and the material. The craftsperson sets the conditions, chooses the pigments, controls the water surface, and makes the first moves. But from that point, the pigments move according to their own physics, and what ends up on the paper is always partly a surprise. What Eckmann achieved here is a surface of remarkable visual complexity and warmth.

The ground is a deep, earthy terracotta that shifts in tone across the sheet, darker in some areas, lighter and almost salmon-toned in others, suggesting the kind of variation you see in aged plaster or unglazed ceramic. Into this warm field, blue-grey teal forms have been drawn and swept into loose spiralling shapes that curl like breaking waves or unfurling fern fronds. At the centre of each spiral, the teal deepens and gathers, its edges feathering outward into fine, leaflike points. Thin veins of cream and white run between the larger forms, tracing the paths where pigments met and pushed against each other on the water surface. The top edge of the sheet retains a horizontal band of the raw terracotta ground before the pattern begins, a reminder of the physical reality of the paper and the process that made it.

Reproduced as a Huecraft archival fine art print on premium heavyweight paper with fade-resistant inks, the full warmth of the terracotta ground and the depth of the teal forms are preserved with complete fidelity to Eckmann's original sheet.

Hang it in a living room where its warm, earthy palette brings immediate depth and texture to the wall. In a dining room it creates a sense of richness and craft that suits long evenings and good conversation. In a bedroom the combination of terracotta and teal is both energising and deeply restful, a pairing that interior designers reach for again and again for very good reason. It suits homes that love natural materials, aged surfaces, and art that carries a genuine human story behind it.
