As Above, So Below

If there is one era in the history of decorative art that understood how to make something feel simultaneously luxurious and alive, it is French Art Nouveau at the close of the 19th century. This 1897 chromolithograph by Maurice Pillard Verneuil is a perfect example of that tradition at its most confident and most joyful. It is two complete design studies on a single sheet, and together they form one of the most richly layered images in Verneuil's published output.

The upper panel is a horizontal frieze of extraordinary decorative energy. Two elegant golden birds, long-legged and fan-tailed, flank a central blue peacock whose tail spreads in a cascade of jewelled eye-spots rendered in concentric rings of orange, teal, and cream. Around them, vivid orange poppies burst from dense coiling stems on a warm amber ground. The rhythm is processional, like a frieze from an ancient palace translated into the visual language of a Parisian design atelier.

Below, filling most of the sheet, is the design for a cloisonne enamel dish, and it is breathtaking. Against a ground of dusty teal blue, two fantastical fish, their bodies cream and gold, their fins flared like wings, coil around one another in a composition that fills the circular format with complete assurance. Their bodies are outlined in bold cream, dotted with orange spots, and surrounded by sweeping fronds of coral red seaweed that curl and billow like flames or fabric caught in water. The outer border of the dish is ringed with golden fan shells on a speckled blue field. A thin gold line separates the interior from the border. The whole thing has the richness of actual enamelwork, the colours dense and jewel-like, the forms bold enough to read from across a room.

The cloisonne enamel technique that inspired this design involves soldering fine metal wires onto a metal base to create individual cells, each filled with coloured glass paste and fired to a hard, luminous finish. It is one of the most labour-intensive and visually spectacular of all decorative arts, and Verneuil has captured its essence completely in flat print form.
