Abundance and Form

José de Martín Simón has spent a lifetime painting at full volume. Born in Spain in 1940 and working across a career that spans more than six decades, he belongs to a generation of European painters who absorbed Cubism not as a historical lesson but as a living instinct. Los dioses, painted in 2013, arrives late in that journey and carries all the confidence of an artist who has nothing left to prove and everything still to say.

The canvas is a riot of abundance. A reclining nude figure anchors the left side of the composition, her fragmented form rendered in the angular, multi-planar language of Cubism, her face a geometry of triangles and tilted planes. Around her cascades a world of plenty: a split watermelon gaping red and seed-studded, figs and apples tumbling in a loose heap, bananas curling at the foreground, and a commanding striped ceramic vessel rising to the right like a deity of its own. The title, "The Gods," seems to ask whether the gods are the figures, the fruits, or the act of painting them.

Simón's brushwork is loose, physical, and unafraid. He builds his surfaces with thick impasto strokes, the paint catching light at its ridges, and lays colour in bold, unapologetic blocks: coral and vermilion, cobalt blue, chrome yellow, olive green, and deep violet. The composition owes a clear debt to Picasso and to the Spanish tradition of the bodegón, the still life as a meditation on earthly richness, but it arrives somewhere distinctly its own, warmer and more exuberant than either ancestor.

There is joy in this painting, but also weight. The nude is not passive; she sits within the abundance rather than presiding over it, part of the same sensory world as the fruit and the vessel. The outdoor setting bleeds in from the right, a flicker of blue sky and warm foliage, anchoring the scene somewhere between interior and garden, between domesticity and myth. It is the kind of painting that rewards looking slowly.
